In the past few days I have had to worry about the media and news coverage more then normal. A few days ago indoor tanning has been moved from a level two Carcinogen into the level one Carcingen category. The Media then took aim on indoor tanning telling people that indoor tanning is as closely related to cancer, as smoking a cigerette. They were able to use this line because cigerettes and indoor tanning are now in the same carcingenetic level.
However, in the SAME level there is also red wine, salted fish, beer and even the SUN. The sun has been in this level since 1992, and it was only a matter of time that the indoor tanning beds would be moved into the same level. However, indoor tanning beds use UV-A and UV-B rays, just like the ones the sun produce. However, indoor tanning (unlike the sun) monitors the amount of UV rays your body receives making it more safe to tan indoors.
Having worked in the tanning industry since February 2007 I have been lucky enough to learn a lot about how tanning works and how to avoid the dangers of tanning. Protect your skin by using SPF everyday to avoid overexposure from the sun. However, don't forget there are many benefits from tanning 10-15 minutes per day.
Tanning can help acne, provide vitamin D (which helps prevent osteoporosis, a common bone disease in women), and get this tanning smart can even help prevent melanoma! On top of helping you physically, indoor tanning can also help prevent emotional things such as depression.
When tanning make sure to moderate your time so you never burn. Burning is what creates wrinkles, and opens the doors for you to get things such as skin cancer. BURNING IS WHAT IS BAD FOR YOU, NOT TANNING!
Just thought I would clarify some things so that you didn't get scared by media tactics. Having ABC 15 stop by my job the other day they did not want to hear about "smart tanning" they only wanted to make a story about how tanning was bad. I had a first hand experience with how the news wants to twist stories to make them worse.
Moving tanning from level two, to level one was not as big of a deal as people had made it out to be, in fact the tanning industry has been waiting for this moment for years.
Most importantly, just remember to tan in moderation, and to tan smart. :)
If you have any other questions on tanning, feel free to ask me! I know plenty of information and am sure I can answer any question you would like to ask!
