How the mirror originally looked!
The first step was to cover the entire mirror so that the paint would not get onto the actual mirror. This part was actually pretty time consuming, but worth it to not ruin the mirror.

The next part was to put a base coat of paint on. The base boat does not have to look nice, but you do want to make sure that anything you put on is not bumpy, or clumped because it will affect every other layer of paint you put on after that. I used the base coat to fill in the gaps that were between the wood due to the mirror being old.

After my base coat, I put on my first layer of black paint. Again the first layer does not have to be applied perfectly because you will have to put another layer on to make it look like a solid black. Do be aware of any paint clumps that may appear! I only had to put on two layers of black and it turned out as dark (and solid) looking as I had wanted.

The next part was the most frustrating and time consuming part of the entire project. I wanted to add something extra to my mirror and so I added a silver trim (in a different location then where the original gold was). I decided to use a stencil paint not only because I had it on hand, but because it has a really nice reflective look and glides really easily along small spaces. It took me about thirty minutes to add the silver to the mirror, but since it was in such a small space I couldn't avoid getting silver above and bellow it. So I had to go back with a smaller paint brush and reapply black to where silver had accidentally wondered to. I was successful in getting most of the unwanted silver off however the mirror still looks just a tad more messy then I would want it to.

The Finish Project!
The last few steps are definitely the easiest! I had to remove all the tape and newspaper ads to reveal the actual mirror. After I had all of that removed I took Fantastick OxyPower mirror cleaner and wiped down the front of the mirror! All I have left now is place it back in its original spot. :)
